19FortyFive: Iranian drones are too hard to shoot down KXan 36 Daily News
This conclusion was drawn by the exclusive publication 19FortyFive, which published the opinion of Captain Cam McMillan, a US Army officer who served in Iraq.
The expert said he and his soldiers initially did not take the Iranian drones seriously, but soon changed their minds.
“Iranian drones are regularly attacking US and coalition forces in the Middle East, slipping through strong defenses and several times hitting targets at US bases,” the analyst told the publication.
For example, Mohajer-6 is a dual-purpose platform. The drone can perform reconnaissance work, as well as launch guided munitions with a range of about 200 kilometers. Shahed-129 and 191 drones have a longer flight range – up to 1,700 and 1,500 kilometers respectively. And the Shahed-136 is a kamikaze drone that carries explosives and flies directly to a target.
“They are extremely difficult to track on radar because they lack the characteristics of manned aircraft, which most modern air defense systems are designed to neutralize. Due to their small radar cross section, relatively low airspeed and low altitude, drones are a serious problem”, the expert writes.
Even if the armed forces manage to identify and track similar drones, it will be very difficult to shoot them down, as most Ukrainian air defense systems are not designed to destroy drones.
