The WWE Universe will have a lot of reckoning to do at the Royal Rumble. The beloved battle royal event returns for its 35th edition when WWE sets up at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, January 28.

The modern version of the Royal Rumble consists of two matches: a men’s and a women’s match, each with 30 participants. Two superstars start the game with entrants arriving one by one in special moments. Superstars are eliminated once they are thrown over the top rope and both feet touch the floor. The winner is only declared once all 29 opponents have been eliminated. Generally, the winners of the Rumbles are guaranteed a world championship match against their favorite champion at the next WrestleMania. The matches usually feature surprise entrants: returning superstars, debutants, one-off appearances from retired wrestlers and celebrity guest spots.

Expectations are high for this year’s event after last year’s men’s Royal Rumble was among the worst in the company’s history. WWE has gone through a change in creative leadership from last year’s game, but the future is uncertain after news of Return of Vince McMahon from a short career.
