Super eagles captain Ahmed Musa has defended midfielder Alex Iwobi, who has been the target of trolling home supporters following Nigeria’s 1-2 loss to Cote d’Ivoire in the 2023 Afcon final.

Nigeria’s loss went viral on social media, with South African, Ghanaian and Angolan supporters mocking the three-time winners.

In an Instagram post, Musa said that blaming one player for the team’s problems is unfair and wrong.

Responding to the Cyber-attacks on Iwobi, Ahmed wrote;

Fans, I want to urge you to stop cyber bullying towards Alex Iwobi. Cyber bullying is not only a breach of decency but also a serious crime. It is hypocritical to say that football unites us while we engage in such behaviour.

There is no doubt that it is difficult to lose a game, but it is unfair and unfair to target one player for the shortcomings of the team. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. Alex gave his all on the field, just like every member of our team.

Instead of spreading negativity, let’s show real love and support for our players. They need to inspire us now more than ever. Let’s lift each other up and stand united, both in victory and defeat. 🇳🇬 MANY THANKS”
