The newly-elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Umar Farooq, yesterday said it was time for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end the current strike and allow students to continue their studies.

To break the deadlock, Farooq said he would also approach the government. He claimed to have already started negotiations with the ASUU leadership to find a long-term solution to the lecturers’ demands.

According to information received yesterday, the striking professors will not receive their earned education allowance from the N50 billion made available by the Federal Government until they call off their strike.

On February 14, academicians began a month-long warning strike. After the administration failed to accede to their demands, the lecturers turned the indefinite strike into indefinite action.

The NANS President assured that during his tenure the ongoing misunderstandings between the government and the University Association would be resolved permanently.
