Whether you watch The Block or not, it’s difficult to ignore the raging headlines alluding to famous Aussie influencer Elle Ferguson and her partner Josh Patfull’s shock walkout.
The pair were cast as contestants on the 2022 season, joining four other couples also trying their hand at home renovation in front of a full-scale camera crew. But the upcoming season had barely started filming when the first scandal hit headlines—the show’s already-famous couple, Ferguson and Patfull, had exited the set 48-hours in.
Unsurprisingly, the story of why and how the departure went down has varied—reality television and unconfirmed rumours go hand in hand.
But what actually transpired wasn’t dramatic at all, in fact, it seems completely understandable.
Ferguson and Patfull, who are engaged, had to make a quick decision and put their family first when the NRL player’s mother suffered a major injury.
According to The Daily Mail, Patfull’s mother fell, reportedly breaking her coccyx and fracturing her wrist.
Around the time of their exit, Ferguson shared an image from an airport to her Instagram story writing: “Wherever you are in the world, whatever you are doing, family always comes first.”
Channel Nine also issued a comment about the pair’s departure at the time: “Over the weekend, we were surprised to have one of our new contestant teams depart The Block a few days into filming for the upcoming season.
“We wish them all the best for the future and we’re excited to cast two new Aussies for the opportunity of a lifetime on The Block.”
But the abrupt exit was painted in a different light by The Block judge Scott Cam, who seemed less than impressed with the pair’s decision to leave.
Speaking to Online News.com in August, he alleged the pair had given “no explanation” when they left.
“They never spoke to us, they just left in the middle of the night. I still don’t know why they left. They never mentioned their sick mother in the 48 hours before they left, or after they left. The executive producer spoke to them (after they left) and they didn’t mention their sick mother then either.”
In an interview with Woman’s Day published this week, Cam added that the producers never wanted the couple to leave.
“Had they talked to us a bit more, we might have been able to talk them off the ledge. We didn’t want them to leave,” he claimed.
Back in June, he alleged to TV Tonight that their exit was “a bit UnAustralian”.
“We had a 48-hour challenge to choose the house that you get and they scarpered after 48 hours.
“Forty-five thousand people applied to be on The Block and win life-changing money. These guys got on and they just couldn’t handle the pace after 48 hours. Which to me is a bit unAustralian! Have a go! It’s p–s poor.”
He later added: “Obviously I wish Joel and Elle success in the future. It’s just that they created a fair bit of chaos for us here in the first 48 hours.”
Whether Cam’s claims are true or not, there’s no doubt the couple wanted to put their family first in the face of an emergency. The details around how their departure went down remains very much unconfirmed, though perhaps their exit episode, which will air in the coming days, will clear things up.
