Charles Cox is a busy man, with his hands currently full with an eight-month shoot in New York for Daredevil: Born Again. As a result, he still hasn’t found time to watch his own events She-Hulk: Lawyer at Law.

At the ICCCon panel in Nashville over the weekend, Cox talked about his process as he approaches a show that’s so different in tone from what he’s used to in Netflix’s. Daredevil and The Defenders. Along with his on-screen nemesis Vincent D’Onofrio, Cox said he “hadn’t actually seen that episode either,” referring to the eighth installment of the series directed by Tatiana Malany.

The only time Cox got to see his scenes as Matt Murdock was while recording additional audio in the studio. “I saw the bits from when we do the ADR, which is the voice-over stuff and it looks fun,” the actor said.

Cox’s portrayal of the beloved vigilante – or rather the unique writing for the character in those two episodes – has been a point of contention among the MCU faithful. Some of the minors turned out to be funny for Murdoch, who is usually very self-deprecating in his own entertainment. As Cox points out, however, that’s not always the case in the comics, and he enjoyed recasting the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in a less threatening light.

“When She-Hulk I came and read those scripts, I felt like this is a really good opportunity to try my hand at that tone with this character and see if I can stay true to the character but also find a side of him that is represented in the comics that would be appropriate for that show. It was a really cool experiment to see if you could take that character and not lose anything—losing what people love about that character, what I love about that character— and still seeing it in different places. It is also true of life. There are times in your life when it is very difficult for you to find humor because you are struggling or because life is hard, and there are times when life is going smoothly and sunglasses and it’s roses.”

Don’t be like Charlie Cox. Watch She-Hulk now on Disney Plus, while you wait for Matt to come back in Daredevil: Born Again, coming in 2024.
