In other words, the once separate sites seem to be getting closer and closer. During Disney’s quarterly earnings call today, CEO Bob Iger announced that the company plans to combine Disney+ and Hulu content into a single streaming app in the coming months.

As Iger put it on the call:
While we will continue to offer Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ as stand-alone options, this is a logical progression of our DTC offerings that will provide more opportunities for advertisers, while providing portfolio subscribers access to stronger and simpler content, leading to greater audience engagement and ultimately. leading to a more unified streaming experience,” Iger said on the earnings call.
Iger said that after returning as CEO last year, and examining the state of the company’s business, he believed that “the combination of the content that is on Disney + with general entertainment is a very strong combination from a subscriber point of view, from a subscription purchase – from a subscriber retention point of view and also from an advertiser point of view.”
Disney owns most of Hulu, but Comcast still owns a third of the streaming service. Beginning in early 2024, Comcast can ask Disney to buy its stake, or Disney can force Comcast to sell its stake. Iger said that Disney and Comcast had not yet figured out exactly what would happen at that point, although they had some discussions on the subject.
The new Disney+ app and Hulu are expected to be available by the end of 2023.
