Astronomy and astrophysics: Dwarf star LP 890-9 discovers two super-Earths

An international team of astronomers has announced the discovery of two new super-Earth exoplanets orbiting a dwarf star. Each of these planets, labeled LP 890-9 b and LP 890-9 c, is slightly larger than Earth. The discovery was published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Exploration Satellite (TESS), scientists observed LP 890-9, the closest M6V dwarf star. This led to the discovery of the inner planet, which received the designation LP 890-9b. Subsequent observations of this system with the SPECULOOS Southern Observatory discovered another transiting planet with a longer period, LP 890-9 c.

LP 890-9 b has a radius of about 1.32 Earth radii and is estimated to have a mass of no more than 13.2 Earth masses. The planet orbits its host every 2.73 days at a distance of about 0.018 astronomical units (AU). LP 890-9 b has an equilibrium temperature of 396 Kelvin (K). The second planet has a radius of about 1.37 Earth radii and is thought to have a mass less than 25.3 Earth masses. The exoplanet is 0.04 AU from the star. And its orbital period is approximately 8.46 days. The equilibrium temperature of this planet is estimated to be 272 K.

The parent star LP 890-9 has a radius of about 0.15 solar radii and 0.12 solar masses. This M dwarf has an effective temperature of about 2871 K and a luminosity of 0.00143 solar luminosities. This star is located about 104 light-years from Earth.
