Eddie Murphy the face of comedy since its inception in the 80s was ahead of its time Saturday Night Liveintroducing every comic character in several film franchises in the 2000s – he seemed to be at the top of his game.

But the 2010s ushered in a period away from the comedian’s perspective, one he recently opened up about.

Murphy began his career at SNL at just 19. He came up with several memorable characters such as an adult version of the Little rascals character Buckwheat and a morose version of the character Gumby. These characters set him up for success in stand-up comedy, as well as films like his buddy-cop debut 48 hours (1982)Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Coming to America (1988), and more.

But he cut ties with the show that got him started after comedian David Spade made an unfavorable joke about his career.

Spade had taken a picture of Murphy and said: “Look kids, it’s a shooting star. Make a wish!”

In 2011 he thought about it Rolling Stone“It’s one thing for you to make fun of some movie of mine, but my career? […] And you know every joke has to go through all the agents, and in the end, you know Lorne [Michaels, Saturday Night Live producer] or whoever says, ‘Okay, it’s okay to remove this post…'”

He only revived the relationship in 2015 when he was honored at the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special.

The 90s began to see his decline, releasing a series of his once successful films except Professor Nuttyr (1996), which was considered a great comedy.

The film’s success saw him switch to family-friendly films in the late 90s and 2000s with roles in Mulan (1998), Dr. Dolittle (also 1998) and its 2001 sequel, the Shrek licensing, Daddy Day Care (2003), and The Haunted Mansion (2003), as well Professor Nutty II: The Klumps (2000).

It was his films aimed at adults at this time that did not do well commercially, among themMetro (1997), I’m spying (2002), and Presentation time (2002), and what is considered one of the biggest financial failures of all time, Biography of Pluto Nash (2002) which made $7 million worldwide against a reported budget of $110 million and roughly two decades in development.

His role as James “Thunder” Early in Dream girls (2006) was praised, earning him the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award in the same category. But when he missed out on the 2007 Academy Award, he lost to Alan Arkin for Dear Little Lady, he went out of the show.

Actually podcast interview with Marc Macron in 2021, he revealed what put him over the edge.

“I had stopped making films in 2011… Because I was making these shitty films, and it was like, ‘This is not fun.’ They give me Razzies; I think those mothers gave me the worst actor ever Razzie.”

He actually received the Worst Actor of the Decade Razzie in 2010 – a parody award for movie failures.

He said, “Maybe it’s time to relax when you get the ‘worst actor ever’ Razzie.”

He said he only intended to take a year off, but one year turned into six.

But the actor, who is now 62, realized that he could not let his legacy end by throwing in the towel after a series of flops.

“Let me get off the couch and do a few things and remind them I’m funny,” he joked.

He is now taking another turn in his career, starring in his first ever Christmas filmCandy Lane, goes back to his family friendly roots in the action comedy genre, along with comedian Tracee Ellis Ross.
