Everything we know about Blade, the MCU Reboot
The fact that a blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a big surprise when it was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July 2019 – but all these years later, we’re still waiting for the film to her way in. production. Filming is supposed to start soon, though, so we thought it was time to put together a list Everything we know about it blade (rebooting the MCU, that is).
The character Blade was previously played by Wesley Snipes in three feature films and by Sticky Fingaz in a short-lived television series. This time, it’s going to be played by Mahershala Ali, who was already attached to the project when it was announced in 2019… had been in pursuit for a couple of years before that. In an interview ahead The tightrope podcast, he revealed that he had first asked what Marvel was thinking about doing anything new with Blade on the day that the Marvel/Netflix series Luke Cage (where Ali Cornell played “Cottonmouth ” Stokes) first appearance, which would have been on September 30, 2016 At that time, Ali was told that Marvel was considering making a new Blade TV series. He wanted to play the character, but in a movie. Soon after he won an Oscar for his performance in the film Green Book at the beginning of 2019, he was able to get a meeting with the head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige to talk about Blade. That’s when the movie deal started coming together.
Although some fans were disappointed to hear that Wesley Snipes would not be reprising the title in blade, Snipes himself was not bothered. Talking to Yahoo, Snipes said, “I’m cool with it. I don’t walk around like Blade, so I’m not attached to the character like that, you know? I do not feel any emotional loss. Zero. I’m glad he was cast, and more than likely he’ll do a good job.” Snipes and Ali talked about the character, with Snipes offering some advice to his successor: make sure you’re in shape, try not to get hurt, and enjoy it while it lasts.
Delroy Lindo has been signed to appear blade with Ali since November of 2021, and it seems that he is still attached to the project. The same cannot be said for Aaron Pierre, who was said to have a major role in the film back in February 2022 … through. Mia Goth was cast in the film back in April 2023, and rumors have swirled that she will be playing the villainous character Lilith.
In early 2022, the folks at Murphy’s Multiverse got their hands on character descriptions that were supposed to be used as part of the casting process. The characters they heard about were: “Abid”, described as a stubborn, South Asian character who has taken a vow of silence after a turbulent life; “Huntley”, described as a man, 40-60; and “Faiza”, a French woman from North Africa between 20 and 40. They thought that these characters would actually be Blade’s fellow vampire hunters, revealed in the pages of the comic book Dracula’s Tomb. They suspected that “Abid” was Taj Nital, “Huntley” was Quincy Harker, and “Faiza” was Rachel van Helsing. “Taj was actually a burly, South Asian character that was introduced first Dracula’s Tomb #3, who did not speak; however, in the comics, he didn’t speak because his throat was ripped out by vampires, so a slight change there. Taj, along with Rachel van Helsing, granddaughter of the great vampire hunter Abraham van Helsing, worked with Quincy Harker to track down the world’s oldest vampire menace, Dracula. Harker, son of Jonathan and Mina Harker of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, eventually teaming up with Frank Drake, a descendant of Dracula, and Blade to take on the vampire nation.” But if these characters were ever in the script, chances are they were written out, like the one Aaron Pierre was going to play.
Ali made his debut as Blade with a voice cameo at the end of the Eternal, where he stops the character Dane Whitman (played by Kit Harington) before he can touch a mysterious sword called the Ebony Blade. In the comics, Whitman becomes the Black Knight while carrying that sword, so some fans thought he might appear as the Black Knight in blade. However, Harington has said that the Dark Knight was never meant to be in the film. The Ebony Blade, on the other hand, might be a different story…
The film was announced in July 2019, but it wasn’t until after we got through the 2020 lockdowns that a writer was hired to work on the film. In February 2021, we heard that Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who was known for her work on the TV shows Watchmen and PEN15, he was writing the script. Since then, we’ve heard that drafts were written by Michael Starrbury (When they see us), True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto (who worked with Ali on season 3 of that show), and Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf).
At one point, we heard that blade began filming in September 2021. It was then pushed to July 2022, with filming to take place in Atlanta, Georgia and New Orleans, Louisiana. Delayed due to creative issues, it would then begin filming in 2023. He was only a few weeks away from filming when production had to be delayed due to the writer’s strike, and then the actor’s strike… when the writer’s strike ended, it was announced that a new writer, Michael Green (Logan), was hired to start the script from scratch.
That’s when Variety reported on some of the problems that had been going on blade back, including five writers, two directors, and closing six weeks before the production was to star. It looks like there were too many cooks in the kitchen, and maybe the brain trust at Marvel is looking to go a little too PC: “One person familiar with the script’s references says the story at one point morphed into a female-led narrative filled with life lessons. Blade was relegated to the fourth lead, an odd idea given that two-time Oscar winner Ali was on board with the studio. Amid reports that Ali was ready to walk out over script issues, Feige went back to the drawing board and hired Oscar-nominated Logan writer Michael Green for a fresh start.
Starrbury took to social media to say that he’s never seen a script that didn’t have Blade in the lead, but there may have been such a script at some point when he wasn’t involved. Whatever the case, it seems likely that Green will be the writer to film the script.
As Variety reported, the project has been through two directors on the way to the screen. John Wickand the incredible co-director David Leitch, who has gone on to make films like Deadpool 2 new and Hobbs & Shawhe said he likes to “lead blade. Chad Stahelski, who directed all of the John Wick films and was also the second unit director on it Captain America: Civil Warsaid blade it was the only Marvel property he would be interested in directing. But instead of those experienced action directors, Marvel turned to Bassam Tariq, a documentarian who made his documentary debut with the 2020 drama. Mogul Mowgli. Tariq was hired in July 2021, but resigned from the project in September 2022, citing scheduling issues. Two months later, Yann Demange (Rick White Boy) is signed on to direct the film, and it looks like he’s going to see it through production.
It wasn’t always a sure thing for the MCU blade it was to be rated as R like the previous one blade there were movies. But when Demange became the director, he got Marvel to agree to let him make an R-rated movie. As he told Deadline, “They gave me the R, which is so important. We have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor. I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, the roughness of it, that allows him to walk the earth in a certain way. I love him for that. He has dignity and integrity, but there is a strength that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to release that and put it on screen.”
Now that blade it seems to be moving forward smoothly with Yann Demange set to direct, Michael Green writing the script, and Mahershala Ali, Delroy Lindo, and Mia Goth cast, business scooper Daniel Richtman has also detailed his share about what he hears the story to be. According to his Patreon report, blade is an R-rated period piece that tells the story of “Lilith going after Blade’s daughter’s blood to create an army of walkers.” Lilith’s weapon appears to be the Ebony Blade, which has been shown before Eternal.
blade have had several release dates over the year, but as far as we know, right now, filming is expected to begin soon, aiming to November 7, 2025 theatrical release date.
And that’s all we know about it blade… So far…
