Get your big revolvers and devil horns ready, because the Hell franchise returns with another reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man. The cinematic history of the title character from Dark Horse Comics created by Mike Mignola has been very fruitful, if not quite so complex. Making a movie about the wildly successful demon-turned-monster-hunter makes sense since he’s easily one of the most popular comic book heroes ever created , the same as Marvel and DC characters. Not to mention, there’s no shortage of stories and characters to make a feature adaptation happen, with different tones to choose from since Mignola’s original comic series expertly balanced action, comedy and horror.

VIDEO COLLIDER OF THE DAY

Hellboy got his first crack at a feature film with the 2004 film, simply titled Hellwhich was directed by a monster movie master auteur Guillermo Del Toro and stars are often a colleague of Del Toro Ron Perlman as a hunter of the great red monster with a heart of gold. Complete with Del Toro’s keen eye for practical effects and Perlman’s infectious charisma as the likable character, the first Hell the film quickly became a fan favorite, despite not doing very well at the box office. The reception was good enough for Del Toro and Perlman to reunite for a sequel. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), a remake that is just as good if not better than the 2004 film. All the elements that made the original work are presented here, now including more complex world-building, a more dangerous antagonist, and an overall stronger plot.

Hell II certainly invited a possible sequel, but Guillermo Del Toro’s busy schedule and desire to focus on other projects led to it not being pursued, despite requests from Ron Perlman himself to he is more open to returning to the profession. Perhaps tired of waiting for a new movie from Del Toro, Lionsgate decided it was time for Hellboy to get the remake treatment. Therefore, Hell (2019), but unlike the previous one, the response to this new change was less than ideal. In spite David’s Harbor being a good choice in the role of the title character, and the R rating pulls nicely, Hell 2019 didn’t impress critics and audiences alike, with lackluster box office numbers seemingly killing the franchise’s live-action hopes. Ironically, what the Hell what suffrage really needs right now is a miracle, and maybe we’re getting it thanks to Crank (2006) filmmaker Brian Taylor. Millenium Media recently announced that they will be taking another swing at bringing Hellboy to life Hellboy: The Crooked Manwhich according to Taylor, doubles down on the horror elements to a version of the Hell a universe we’ve never seen on screen before.
