The 2021/22 season saw the UK Home Office record the highest number of breaches of the order during football matches in England and Wales in eight years, the BBC reports.

In total, police made 2,198 football-related arrests. This is the highest number since the 2013/14 season (when 2,273 people were arrested).

At the same time, there were several scandals related to the anger of the fans on the field and the assault of the players. Then a fan was jailed for running onto the pitch and head-butting Sheffield captain Billy Sharp, and another was banned for four years for attacking Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen in a match against Manchester City.

The ministry attributed the increase in crime to the return of fans to stadiums after restrictions related to the pandemic. Various incidents involving fans were reported in more than half (53%) of all matches, 1,609 out of 3,019.

Compared to the 2018/19 season, this figure increased by 60%, the number of cases where fans ran onto the pitch (441) increased by 127% and the number of arrests increased by 59%.
