Hayden Christensen reflects on the Star Wars prequel trilogy
Hayden Christensen reflects on the Star Wars prequel trilogy, saying that he thinks the films have held up well over the years.
This year marks 25 years since the Star wars prequel trilogy, and Empire’s latest issue is a huge celebration of all three films, including interviews with Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid.
Hayden Christensen explained his time in the Star wars licensing. “It was an amazing experience,” said Christensen. “And just a very warm one. The journey I’ve been on with Star Wars over the last 20 years and years … has been pretty wild, and where we are now makes a lot of sense to me.” In fact, the backlash against the prequels was quite intense at the time, with plenty focused on Christensen’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker. These ideas have persisted over the years, with a new generation of fans holding the Star wars prequel trilogy in high regard.
“I think these films have held up well over time. It feels like a testament to the work we’ve done,” said Christensen. “Everyone who worked on these films thought we were part of something special. We all wanted to do our best work, and we were very concerned about it. And so to see the reaction of the fans now, it’s really cool.“
After the release Star Wars: Revenge of the SithHayden Christensen’s time in the franchise seemed to be over, but he recently returned to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Achsoka on Disney + and fans ready to accept. Empire asked Christensen if he had any advice for his younger self, who stepped into the shoes of the galaxy’s greatest villain years ago. “Although I was a little frustrated, I was also a confident young man, and I wanted to make my mark,” said Christensen. “But I guess if I were to get some advice for me at that general time in my life, it would be: ‘Patience’. Because my journey is with character and with Star wars it’s been very bumpy at times… but I’m in a good place with it now. And that’s how I say patience.“
As for the future, who knows, but Christensen has said he would be open to reprising the Darth Vader series role down the road. “If the opportunity presents itself, I’d be all for it,” he said. “I think this is a very complex character, and there is a lot to explore further. If the powers that be were so inclined, I would be so happy to do so.“
