House speaker drama: Democrat reads ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving AF**k’ book on the floor

While the House Republican conference was in turmoil on Friday as GOP lawmakers struggled to muster enough votes to elect a speaker, California Speaker Katie Porter sat quietly on the other side of the passage reading a book.

Poerter, dressed to match the book’s cover, read, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k,” making an understated statement that captured how Democrats felt after watch Republicans try to get elected fail. House speaker again and again over four days.

The New York Times bestselling self-help book by Mark Manson argues that people need to stop thinking positively and learn to deal with negative situations in order to be happy, albeit in much worse terms. .

Republicans were in a bad position until an agreement was reached between McCarthy and the 20 GOP dissenters who demanded several concessions before supporting him. The California Republican was finally elected speaker of the House on the 15th ballot from Tuesday, winning over most of the holdings while six Republicans voted against McCarthy “present ” to let him win.

McCarthy agreed to allow one lawmaker to make a motion to elect a new speaker, returning to the way the House had been run for decades before that practice was abolished under former Rep. sitting Nancy Pelosi. He agreed to vote on term limits and adopt a budget resolution that will balance the budget in 10 years, and cap fiscal year 2024 spending at FY 2022 levels.

McCarthy agreed to reject any spending negotiations with the Senate until the Senate passed its own spending bills. He agreed not to raise the debt limit without spending cuts or other fiscal reforms, to establish a committee to investigate the government’s weapons against US citizens, and to ensure that no bills are raised on the floor. until at least 72 hours have passed.

And he agreed to give three seats to three members of the House Freedom Caucus on the House Rules Committee, which sets the terms of debate for all legislation that goes to the House floor.

“The 15th time is the charm, apparently. Americans deserve more than House Republicans’ inability to govern — and better than the rule changes they’re proposing,” Porter tweeted after McCarthy won the election. “The deal is to weaken watchdogs, empower extremists, and tip the scales in favor of special interests betraying the American people.”
