At the start of the new year, President Joe Biden deserves some recognition for finally doing the bare minimum and visiting the US-Mexico border.

But the rush of the mainstream media to praise his visit is a sign that the president is getting serious about solving the crisis at our southern border very early. Unfortunately, his administration’s facilitation of massive abuse of the asylum system and the many loopholes in enforcement policies continue unabated.

Nothing about the president’s visit indicated that he intends to work across the aisle to solve this problem.

First, his very choice to visit El Paso speaks volumes. Instead of visiting the Del Rio or Rio Grande Valley regions where most illegal immigration occurs and where Customs and Border Patrol men and women are stretched very thin every day, Biden went to an urban area with a border full of barriers that see. a relatively small percentage of the immigrants who enter our country illegally.

Not only that, but media reports revealed that the city of El Paso cleared the streets of all migrants before Biden arrived to ensure that he would not face the consequences of his disastrous policies. And he had the choice to take a photo at the border wall that was paid off and he fought at every treacherous turn in the worst way.

Here in South Texas, we know the true depth of the border crisis. In reality, the Mexican cartels have operational control of the border with their human trafficking racket that takes full advantage of our lax border policies. And it is vulnerable immigrants such as women, children, and the elderly who often pay the heaviest cost, with migrant deaths going higher than last year.

Immigration is at the top of the ticket this November as a record number of illegal immigrants cross the border.

Last month, Customs and Border Patrol met with more than 250,000 migrants, the first time since record keeping that this number has reached more than a quarter of a million in one month. But at the same time, Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas has the ability to continue to claim that the border is secure and under control. With his attitude on the sand, the secretary has lost the confidence of the men and women who serve under him on the border, and I believe that the House Republicans are fully deserving. has been seeking the impeachment of Mayorkas. It is a drastic but necessary action given the serious dereliction of duty that has occurred.

If President Biden is ever serious about gaining control of our border, there are obvious steps his administration must take. He should reinstate the Remain In Mexico policy, end Capture and Deportation, tighten (rather than loosen) eligibility for asylum, and resume construction of a modern border wall system. These measures would be enough to pressure Customs and Border Patrol and secure the border to the point that Congress could begin bipartisan work to improve our legal immigration system and to provide permanent solutions to DACA beneficiaries and others: goals that policy makers are reasonable from both. parties share. But the end must come first, and so far, President Biden has shown no desire to fulfill that basic duty.
