Italy will be able to receive only 20 percent of the additional volume of gas from Algeria
La Repubblica: Algeria will be able to supply an additional 20% of promised gas to Italy
According to La Repubblica newspaper, citing the Algerian research website Algeria Part, only 20 percent of the additional gas volume promised to Algeria could be supplied to Italy.
Thus, Rome would receive about 200 million cubic meters of fuel, compared to the calculated billions, the literature says. This was due to difficulties in commissioning essential production facilities of Sontrach, the Algerian state oil and gas company.
Previously, the average volume of Italy’s imports from Algeria was 20 to 22 billion cubic meters per year, according to an additional agreement signed in 2022, an additional supply of nine billion cubic meters is provided. The volume will increase gradually during 2023-2024.
The Algerian part confirms that Sontrach will only be able to deliver 3.5 billion of the nine billion announced. Italian energy company Eni said it was not aware of any problems with the availability of the additional gas volumes agreed and that they were already being shipped to the country.
Earlier, the country’s environmental transition minister, Roberto Cingolani, said Italy would be completely independent of Russian gas in the winter of 2024, as it is able to find alternatives. The country will replace almost half of Russian fuel – 13 of the 29 billion cubic meters – with supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
