Depp will play King Louis XV in the upcoming historical drama.

A series of new photos from the upcoming period drama Jeanne du Barry are released. The new images feature the star of the project, Johnny Depp, when he returned to the big screen after his highly publicized defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber heard.

The images, shared on Instagram by French publication Première, show Depp staged in an 18th-century French role King Louis XV. The film, which will be set entirely in French (Depp learned the language while previously living in France), would revolve around Louis’ life with his infamous lover, Madame du Barry, who often fought with the established nobles of the French kings. In the first image, Depp can be seen, dressed as Louis, talking to him du Barry, played by the project director, Maiwenn Le Besco – called anonymous Maïwenn – because she put her head on the king’s shoulder. The second image appears to show du Barry flirting with Louis amidst a crowd of onlookers, in what appears to be the Palace of Versailles, where much of the film takes place. In this image, Depp appears to be dressed in even more regal attire than the previous one, very much in keeping with the mass and status of the country’s elite before the Revolution. France. The third and final photo shared by Première shows another image of Depp dressed as the king, in different, but similar, colors.


While previous images from the film have been released, this trio undoubtedly gives the best look yet at the upcoming film. Beyond Depp and Maïwenn, Jeanne du Barry also stars Pierre Richard, Louis Garrel, Benjamin Lavernhe, Noémie Lvovsky, Melvil Poupaud, India Hair and Pascal Gregory. Their roles have yet to be announced, although one of them is likely to play Louis’ wife, Marie Leczynska.

Maiwenn took charge of the film on the side of creative development. Apart from acting and directing, she also wrote the screenplay by Teddy Lussi-Modeste and he does side by side Download Pascal Chaucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat through their French label Why Not Productions. IN2 and France Televisions are also producing.

Depp was cast as Louis in January 2022, and Netflix acquired the distribution rights at the Cannes Film Festival in July, with filming starting later that year. However, the streaming service’s purchase was primarily a deal for French distribution, and it’s unclear if the film will ever make it to international theaters.

Netflix releases Jeanne du Barry, which will be known in France as The Best Thing, in French theaters in 2023. However, it won’t release the film on its streaming service until a full 15 months later, the earliest it can be seen by a global audience. Check out the new photos from the movie below:
