On Wednesday, the French President announced to President Zelensky that Ukraine would receive further military aid from France. In the phone conversation, Macron said that Ukraine would receive a delivery of several AMX-10 RC, which is a combat vehicle on wheels like a small tank with a cannon.

A French official said: “This is the first time that military vehicles are being delivered from the West to support the Ukrainian army.

According to the French Ministry of Defense, they will be delivered quickly after negotiations between France and the Ukrainian military.

Although France has already provided the Caesar howitzers and prestigious air defense equipment to Ukraine, Macron’s latest move represents a sudden change in the French President’s course.

Last month, he was criticized for continuing to provide military aid to Ukraine and for comments that showed he continued to consider Russia’s interests.

European countries filed protests over comments Macron made in an interview with French TV station TF1 on December 3.

The French President said that Europe should start thinking “how to give promises to Russia the day it returns to the negotiating table” amid discussions about Europe’s future security structures.

Ukraine and the Baltic states immediately condemned the comments, with several other European states accusing France of failing to put a united front on NATO members against Russia.

Despite criticizing the comments, President Zelensky has kept the dialogue open between the two countries and has thanked Macron for the new delivery.

Macron and Zelensky have “agreed on further cooperation to significantly strengthen our air defense and other defense capabilities”, the President of Ukraine said in a social media post.

Macron hopes his changed stance will finally see him win favor with friendly nations after criticism from both the United States and Russia as he tries to be a difference maker for both sides.

Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin sent Macron a piece of shrapnel from a Caesar howitzer that was ejected from his back after shells hit his birthday party in a region of Ukraine where the Russia.

Mr Rogozin asked the French Ambassador to give Macron the piece of shrapnel that was “just a thousand meters away from killing me”.

He said: “Tell him that no one will go unpunished for the war crimes of France, the US, the UK, Germany and other NATO countries in the Donbas. “

The change in tone from the French President was first seen during his televised New Year’s address in which he promoted Ukraine’s victory over Russia for the first time.

He said: “Your fight to defend your country is brave and inspiring. Over the coming year, we will be by your side without fail.

“We will help you to victory… You can count on France and the European Union.”
