A gunman opened fire in a ballroom dance studio, killing 10 people and wounding 10 others Saturday night in Monterey Park, California near Los Angeles, local police said.

The reason is still unknown. As the incident happened on the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Meyer said they would be “looking at every angle whether it was a hate crime or not.” Monterey Park was once called “the first suburban Chinatown”, because 65% of its population is Asian American. The shooting happened on West Garvey Avenue, home to several grocery stores and Asian restaurants, at 10:22 p.m.

The 10 injured people were taken to hospital, and their conditions range from stable to critical. The gunman is still at large, and the firearm used is currently unknown.

Police said there will be a press conference at City Hall in Monterey Park at 8 a.m. Pacific time.

Governor of California Gavin Newsom tweeted his condolences on Sunday: “Should have been a night of joyous Lunar New Year celebration at Monterey Park. Instead, they were victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence. Our hearts ache as we learn more about him last night’s devastating actions. We are monitoring the situation closely.”
