Nicholas Hoult played Lex Luthor
Nicholas Hoult is set to play iconic villain Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy.

Nicholas Hoult may not have won the role of Superman, but Deadline is reporting that he’s set to play iconic villain Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
When James Gunn started auditioning actors for the role of Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult was one of those who screen tested. Although he obviously did not get the role, there were rumors that he was being considered for Lex Luthor. I know Nicholas Hoult has pursued several superhero roles in the past, but honestly, I think Lex Luthor is a much better fit for the actor, who thrives in more dark and darker.
David Corenswet (Peel) star in Superman: Legacy as Clark Kent with Rachel Brosnahan (Lady Maisel) as Lois Lane. We also see Nathan Fillion (The Rocker) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly mischievous member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabel Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as a Falcon; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho. It was also recently announced that María Gabriela de Faría (A killer class) to play The Engineer, a member of the Authority.
As Lex Luthor, Hoult follows in the footsteps of Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg, who each played the character on the big screen. However, James Gunn may have been more inspired by Michael Rosenbaum, as he named the actor’s portrayal of Lex Luthor on Baile Beag “the best” of them all.
James Gunn writes and directs Superman: Legacyand has promised that the tone of the film will be different from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran has also done so Superman: Legacy will not be an original story and will focus on “Superman balances his Kryptonian heritage with his humanity. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. It is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.” Superman: Legacy it is intended to visit theaters July 11, 2025which Gunn recently confirmed was still true.
