Once Tom Cruise ignored Nickelback in a hall, which seems fair
One of the great oxymorons of modern music, Nickelback have been extremely successful going back over 20 years despite their reputation as one of the easiest bands on the planet to dislike.
The group’s signature style of combining dad rock with power balloons has won them as many fans as it takes away, but it seems Tom Cruise they weren’t so keen on making eye contact as they enjoyed each other when they both planned to make guest appearances on MTVs TRLwith Chad Kroeger revealing a funny story at the Toronto International Film Festival where they were promoting a new documentary Hat to Lovewhich is just as sensitive to a title as it sounds.
The frontman reflected on the physical resemblance between the A-list megastar and cohort Ryan Peake, but it seems brief eye contact was all they were willing to share High gun and Mission: Impossible legend when their paths crossed.
“We’re walking towards the green room in a hall, this little hall, I’m right behind you [Ryan], and this is Tom Cruise. I have front seats, this is great. Tom looks good as he walks, and he locks eyes with Peake. We get to the end of the corridor, and I go, ‘Hey!’ and [Ryan] he says, ‘It’s not a word!'”
Even though they were one of the best-selling acts on the planet at the time, it describes Nickelback’s popularity to a tee, even when they pretty much came head-to-head with Cruise at at the height of their cultural relevance, he was still reluctant to give them the time of day.
