LAHORE, Pakistan – Pakistan launched its first digital population and housing census on Wednesday in an effort to securely collect demographic data on everyone ahead of this year’s parliamentary elections, officials said.

The digital census will provide data for policy decisions, which is now based on the 2017 census which counted the population at 207 million people. It is also intended to increase security and avoid another morass like the one under the 2021 census. The results of that census, which was done by hand, were never announced due to complaints of errors and exclusions.
