Russian MP Motorsport team driver Alexander Smolyar finished 10th in the drivers’ standings in the Formula 3 Championship. According to the results of the final stage in Italian Monza, the Russian started from pole position, but was forced to leave the track after a crash.
French ART Grand Prix driver Victor Martins won the championship with 139 points. Barbados’ Zane Maloney finished second with 134 points, while Britain’s Oliver Bierman was third with 132 points.
Smolyar was tenth in the final standings with 76 points.
On March 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing under their countries’ flags, as well as holding international competitions on the territory of Russia and Belarus. Russian and Belarusian racers were only allowed to compete in neutral conditions and under the FIA flag (this decision also applied to all racing series).
Three days later, the FIA announced that Russian and Belarusian racing drivers would not be able to compete under the organization’s protection unless they signed a declaration of commitment to the principles of peace and political neutrality. On March 10, the press service of the Russian motor sports development program SMP Racing, of which Smolyar is a member, announced that its drivers will not participate in the international racing series in 2022. However, Smolyar still started the season in Formula 3.
For 20-year-old Smolyar, this is his third season in Formula 3. Prior to MP Motorsport, he drove for French team ART. Last season, Smolyar won two races.
