Solo Lord and Miller – WTF Happened to This Unmade Movie?

It’s safe to say that since Disney bought the rights to it Star wars from Lucasfilm, the road to making a series of Star wars movies that would appeal to young and old generations have been bumpy. Stories of turmoil behind the scenes Rogue One: A Star Wars Storybut Lord and Miller’s most infamous project remains Solo. The film, which was to be the origin story of Han Solo, was to be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, two talented directors known for their 21 Jump Street reboots and their creative animated films like White clouds with a chance of fleshy parts and The Lego movie. Longevity Star wars fans, they seemed like good choices to direct the film, but the two were surprisingly fired from the film after four and a half months of shooting.

Why Lord and Miller were fired Solo? The rumor was that their version of the film was too light, as they departed from the script by Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan. There were also concerns about director Alden Ehrenreich’s performance, given his incredible job of replacing Harrison Ford as the title character. Whatever the case, Lucasfilm and Disney were concerned enough that Lord and Miller were unceremoniously fired and replaced by Ron Howard. A legendary director in his own right, who performed memorably Willow for Lucasfilm, Howard came into the project with a few strikes against him, as people resented Hollywood’s establishment figure taking over for two young up-and-comers. Howard tried his best to do good Star wars film, but the film was a distinct flop in the end. The worldwide gross was good, but with reruns included, the film cost so much money that it lost tens of millions. To add insult to injury, Lord and Miller proceeded to get involved Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won raves as an instant classic. Who knows how good (or bad) their version of Solo could be?
