Gunn’s take on Superman sees the hero struggling to make sense of both his Kryptonian, alien heritage, and the world he was introduced into on Earth, growing up in Kansas. He explained some of the idea behind the plot of “Superman: Legacy” on March 15 Twitter thread “It’s been a long road to this point. Superman was offered to me years ago – I said no at first because I didn’t have a way to feel unique and fun and emotional that gave the respect Superman deserved,” he explained. “Then a little less than a year ago I saw an entry, in many ways focusing on Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farm parents inform who he is and his choices which he does.
Gunn said that although he initially agreed to write the script, it took him longer to sign on to direct it as well.
