The Best Box Office Bombs in Movie History
In 2024, a movie is often declared a success or failure before it even “opens” in theaters.
In the context of the movie industry, we still say that movies “open on Friday.” ” But most of the top tents start screening on Thursday – sometimes as early as 3pm in the afternoon. Box office receipts from these early showings are reported to be breathless within hours – at which point some pundits have declared a film a hit or a flop.
Years of work, and the result is confirmed in hours.
But that’s only one side of the story. As I’ve said many times before at ScreenCrush, financial success does not equal creative success. (And, unfortunately, the opposite.) Where possible, this site likes to highlight the films that may not have connected with a mass audience, but were still unique – like our 2023 list of the best box office bombs of the year.
When I’ve made lists like this in the past, I’ve often ranked them by their box office success; the greater the financial loss, the higher on the list. This time, I’ve decided to go the other way and rank them in order of personal preference. I included their ticket sales and budgets as well, though, in case you were curious about how these films fared with audiences, compared to each other.
Now let’s take a look at the best box office bombs in history. If you haven’t seen any of them, you should; almost all of them are available to rent or stream right now.
