Head of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation Mariam Giorgobiani told Sports.ru that there are no negotiations on the possible transfer of the Russian dance couple Diana Davis / Gleb Smolkin to the Georgian national team.
“There is no real movement in this direction. It’s just useless talk. Of course, no one can guarantee what will happen next, but so far there is nothing to discuss,” Giorgobiani said.
According to him, Georgia is incredibly proud of coach Eteri Tutberidze (she is Davis’ mother). “If I get a chance, I will try to help her and no one knows how she will express herself. We cannot speculate, but at the moment there is no discussion about Diana’s transition with Gleb,” the official added.
An unknown person tried to set fire to the Khrustalny skating rink, where the Tutberidze train was located.
In June, American journalist David Lees reported that Davis and Smolkin’s duet would be featured in the US Figure Skating Federation. He also claimed that Davis was married to Smolkin. This information has not been confirmed.
Davis was born in the United States but grew up in Russia. Last season, the couple made their debut at the adult level and finished second in the Russian championship, which led to their participation in the European championship (7th place) and the Olympic Games (14th).
The Russian figure skater was suspended from international competitions in March by a decision of the International Skating Union. Last week, the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) reported that they had received 19 applications to change sports citizenship since the beginning of the year.
In particular, Tutberidze mentioned Olympic champions Yulia Lipnitskaya, Alina Zagitova and Anna Shcherbakova, as well as two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva.
