The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist – is it a true story?

Netflix Untold is back for a second series and the first episode explores the story of Manti Te’o and the story of a non-existent girlfriend.

*WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD*

Catfishing as a concept has been mainstream for the past ten years. Unfortunately, it seems that there are still people who fall prey to online phishing.

A new episode of Netflix Untold looks at exactly this issue. It explores the story of college football player Manti Teo and his girlfriend who never existed.

Is that girlfriend who never existed based on a true story?

Everyone involved in the latest episode of Netflix Untold may wish it wasn’t so, but the story of a non-existent girlfriend is completely true and tells the story of a true story.

From the official Netflix trailer, we learn that the new documentary focuses on Manti Teo, a Hawaiian-born American football player. That same evening, his world unravels when he discovers that his girlfriend and his grandmother have passed away.

As Teo learns the tragic news, he dedicates his upcoming football season to the late pair who meant so much to him.

Where the story takes an interesting turn, however, is when Te’o discovers that his girlfriend, Lene Kekua, was never actually there in the first place. He was catfished.

Te’o tells the cameras that it was his uncle who first pointed out that his girlfriend was not who he thought he was. That’s when things started to take a dark turn for the young footballer.

The real identity of Lene Kekua

The trailer also reveals the real identity behind Kekua’s fake personality. We learn that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, known by the nickname Naya, is a catfish.

Naya reveals what her thought process was when setting up an account as Kekua. She admits that she wasn’t brave enough to reveal her true identity to Teo.

The clip also shows a voicemail from what is believed to be Te’o Kekua, where a voice is heard saying she ‘loves him so much’.

As Naya admits she didn’t expect the story to garner worldwide attention, the trailer gives us a glimpse of the media circus that surrounded the story’s non-existent girlfriend, and Teo hints at the fact. Neither should be completely transparent, (though that part remains to be seen).
