‘The Phantom Menace’ Returns to Theaters for 25th Anniversary
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is about to turn 25 years old, and is heading back to theaters for this important milestone.
In the news that comes as a big surprise to people who were big Star wars fans in the 1990s and like to think they’re not old yet, The Phantom Menace opened in theaters exactly 25 years ago, on May 19, 1999. At the time, it was the first new Star wars film in 16 years, and the first film directed by George Lucas since the first Star wars back in 1977. It was a huge pop culture moment of a kind that we almost never get to see these days in any context. And while the film was not well-received by critics, it was a huge success, grossing over $900 million worldwide in its first theatrical release.
Eventually, much public sentiment began to turn on him The Phantom Menacebut as the film has aged, the consensus has begun to shift back the other way, especially among those who were children in 1999, who saw The Phantom Menace in theaters way back when. And now they will have a chance to relive their youth, as Lucasfilm will be re-releasing the film on the big screen possibly as part of its 25th Anniversary celebration.

Specifically, the poster mentions it Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menacethe original full title for the film when it opened in theaters 25 years ago, and not just Star Wars: The Phantom Menacewhich would match the way Disney titled them Star wars movies. (ie yes Star Wars: The Force AwakensNo Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens).
The Force is awakening starring Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman, in a prequel set decades before the events of 1977 Star wars. It introduced a young Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) and showed some of the early events in his life that set him on his path to becoming Darth Vader.
If so The Phantom Menace being 25 doesn’t bother you, think about this: When The Phantom Menace first came out in theaters in 1999, the first Star wars he was only 22 years old! (Quad the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade GIF of the guy turning into a skeleton.)
