The ultimate Broadway Hit is a movie
After years and years of stopping and starting, Wickedly is a movie at last.
Technically it’s last two movies – they split the story in half and are releasing it in two parts this fall and next fall – but whatever. Wickedly now coming to the big screen later this year. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande is Glinda, the future good witch.
As in the Broadway show that inspired the film – and which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary on stage – the film has Wickedly showing where these two witches came from, explaining how they became the characters The Wizard of Oz. The first trailer for the film features some of “Defying Gravity”, the hit musical number from Broadway – although it doesn’t actually show anyone singing on screen.

When I showed my Wickedly she was pregnant with the six-year-old child of that clip as her response: “I don’t want to see that movie… need see that movie.” So maybe that’s a good sign for the filmmakers that hardcore fans are going to be excited for this thing.

Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Broadway’s Harriet, The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman on because of her unusual green skin, which she has not yet discovered. real power, and multi-platinum Grammy-winning recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, bedecked with privilege and ambition, who has yet to find her true heart. The two meet as students at Shiz University in the wonderful Land of Oz and form an unlikely but deep friendship. After meeting The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unquenchable desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to be true to herself, and to those around her, has unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. . Wickedly is slated to open in theaters on Thanksgiving. While the trailer was just announcing it Wickedlythe YouTube video description confirms that this is still a two-part film, with the second half (Angel Part Two) is expected in theaters on November 26, 2025.
