Ahead of Lucas Paqueta’s signing for West Ham as the club’s record-breaking acquisition, Thiago Silva admitted he advised Chelsea to look into the prospect of signing Paquet.
The Hammers announced earlier in the week that they had signed Brazilian midfielder Paquetá in a “club-record deal”.
West Ham have already paid £36.5 million for the Lyon player, but if add-ons are satisfied, the price could rise to more than £50 million, following Sebastian Haller’s £45 million transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The midfielder is admired by Brazilian side Silva, who claim they approached Chelsea about signing him before he joined their London rivals West Ham.
“I knew he was ready to leave Lyon,” Silva told ESPN Brazil [and] There were conversations with a few people here, but unfortunately things didn’t work out.”
We weren’t sure he would leave Leon for good. Due to team illnesses, we had other priorities once last week. This situation worsened [clearer].
So we needed a striker and a new defender. It was slightly less than a midfielder. I believe that’s why things don’t work out.
However, West Ham are a fantastic club in the Premier League and have a very strong organizational structure, so I’m happy for Paquette.
Paqueta made his West Ham debut in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham and looks set to be named in Brazil’s World Cup squad later in the year.
On Saturday, the 25-year-old will try to help David Moyes’ side beat Chelsea and Silva said: “I hope he’s sad on Saturday.”
After that, he can be happy and qualify for the World Cup by playing good football, because he knows how to get it.
Chelsea have spent more than £250 million on the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, without signing Paquet.
Silva commented on Chelsea’s acquisitions of Koulibaly and Fofana, saying they were “valuable players” and “high level”.
Because we didn’t start strong and didn’t concede many goals, they could give our defense a lot of consistency. They can be used.
We have never played together before and I don’t know if this will be the first time. However, it is easier to cooperate and achieve successful results when playing with top-level players.
