Funimation, America’s OTT streaming service hub for anime and other entertainment content, is about to bid adieu. Launched in 2016, after an initial partnership with Toei Animation, funimation is now shutting down permanently. Fortunately, although the app and website services are ending, Funimation joined Crunchyroll in March 2022. This integration is a promise to the audience that they will continue to have a seamless experience while streaming anime.

Officially, Funimation will cease to exist as a streaming platform from April 2, 2024. According to the streaming service, they made this decision with the intention of providing the best experience for the viewers and an opportunity to give them one big anime library. Therefore, teaming up with Crunchyroll is Funimation’s best step forward to achieve this goal.

The Funimation union explained Crunchyroll

Addressing the uproar, Funimation writes, “As part of Crunchyroll’s merger of fan services announced in March 2022, the Funimation app and website will be shut down on April 2, 2024.”

It then reassures its users by saying, “Rest assured, this transition will not affect your access to the vast library of anime available on Crunchyroll.” We remain committed to delivering the best anime streaming experience and will continue to expand our offerings to cater to your diverse interests! “

Funimation announced, in December 2023, that the feature for downloading and viewing content offline would be discontinued. In addition, the platform has been urging its customer base to move to Crunchyroll. With this, the user’s subscription will move to Crunchyroll, along with their Watch History.

That said, Funimation has yet to address the refund issue. Additionally, due to the difference in libraries between Funimation and Crunchyroll, fans cannot expect all of their content to be transferred to Crunchyroll.

While the news of Funimation’s closure is unfortunate for loyal Funimation customers, its decision to join Crunchyroll ensures that fans can continue to have the best streaming experience better.
