Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks create a stuffed animal crack in the first trailer for The Beanie Bubble.

The Beanie Baby craze in the 90s was something to behold. Millions of people collected as many of the colorful plush bears as they could get their hands on, with some even convinced that they would be profitable investments. As most of us know someone with a box (or several) of Beanie Babies taking up space in their garage, that investment certainly didn’t pay off. Apple Original Films has released the first trailer The Bubble Beaniewhich describes the rise of stuffed toys.

The Bubble Beanie stars a beardless Zach Galifianakis (who is still so weird to me) as Ty Warner, the toy maker who became a billionaire thanks to the Beanie Baby craze of the late 1990s. The Bubble Beanie also stars Elizabeth Banks (Bear Cocaine) as Robbie, Ty’s business partner Sarah Snook (Success) as Warner’s wife Sheila, and Geraldine Viswanathan (Miracle Workers) as an employee of Ty Inc. Maya.

Why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold?” read the official synopsis for The Bubble Beanie. “Ty Warner was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women who mastered an idea turned into the biggest toy scam in history. ‘The Beanie Bubble’ is an inventive story about what and who we value, and the unsung heroes whose names didn’t appear on the heart-shaped tag.

Zach Galifianakis will lend his voice to Disney’s upcoming live-action remake Lilo & Stitch, which is currently filming. The origin Lilo & Stitch film tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo and a dog-like extraterrestrial creature called Experiment 626, who is named Stitch after Lilo adopts him. Although Stitch is a force of chaos and destruction, he eventually develops a close bond with Lilo, and together, the two avoid the monsters sent out to capture him.

Kristin Gore and Damian Kulash Jr. directed The Bubble Beaniewith Gore also writing the script based on it The Big Bubble Baby Beanie: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute by Zac Bissonnette.
