Zakharova: Romania violated the ITU Charter by following political orders from Washington

By revoking the visas of members of the Russian delegation to attend the conference in Bucharest, Romania has seriously violated the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Charter and Convention, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. Her comments were posted on the diplomatic mission’s website.

The reason for taking such a step, the Romanian embassy in Moscow called “threat to national security”. “It is clear that Bucharest is trying to avoid fair competition. This follows a political mandate from Washington, promoted by Doreen Bogdan-Martin, director of the ITU Development Bureau. The American is already known for her brazen use of administrative resources to promote her candidacy,” Zakharova said.

US officials are abusing their position as the host country of the UN headquarters, manipulating the issuance of entry visas to Russia’s official representatives, openly showing their contempt for international legal acts, Zakharova stressed. The purpose of such unfair competition is to prevent the election of Russian candidate Rashid Ismailov.

Washington and Bucharest intend to ensure the conditions for the victory of the American candidate, which will push the Western establishments in the ITU to the detriment of the users of the rest of the world, the politician concluded.

The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference is scheduled from 26 September to 14 October.

Earlier, Zakharova accused Western countries of inaction against the Kyiv regime due to the threat of a nuclear disaster. According to the diplomat, Western states are “promoting the issue of nuclear catastrophe in an anti-Russian vein and trying to impose something that does not exist.”
